Obituary for Joachim Lambertus "Kim" van Leeuwen

Steubenville, Ohio – Kim van Leeuwen, 65, of East Liverpool passed away Thursday, February 14, 2019, at Trinity West following a lengthy illness.

Kim was born in Bandung, Indonesia on January 25, 1954. He became a US citizen in 1987 at the age of 33. Kim was a member of First United Methodist Church. He loved to play and teach others how to play chess. Kim was a member of the US Chess Federation and won the Arkansas state chess championship in 2017. He also placed third in the 1985 World Open.

Kim was preceded in death by his father Franciscus van Leeuwen and his mother-in-law Louise Fitzgerald.

Surviving are his wife Colleen Fitzgerald van Leeuwen; daughter Alissa (Brian) Reinhardt of Austin, AR; son Aaron van Leeuwen of Austin, AR; three granddaughters Kyla van Leeuwen of Carlsbad, CA, Madilyn van Leeuwen of Sanford, FL and Logen Reinhardt of Austin, AR; grandson Carlisle Reinhardt of Austin, AR; mother Herta van Leeuwen of Covina, CA; sister Gabe van Leeuwen of Covina, CA; father-in-law Earl Fitzgerald of East Liverpool and three brothers-in-law Dennis Fitzgerald of Arizona, Mike Fitzgerald of Arizona and Brian Fitzgerald of East Liverpool. A celebration of life service will be conducted by Pastor Stephen J. Knisely at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 200 West Fifth Street, East Liverpool.
